Horseback Riding

Lessons and Trail Rides

Camp Seafarer offers riding lessons and trail rides for two-week and four-week campers ages 9 - 16 at an additional fee.

During horseback riding lessons, campers receive instruction in hunter seat equitation using the forward riding system. Lessons are offered for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders.

As campers learn more about riding, they increase their skills and move on to jumping and cantering. Campers also spend time learning about horse and equipment care. Horseback Riding ranks include identifying horse colors and markings, cleaning tack and properly tacking up a horse.

Lessons are scheduled at Camp in one-hour lessons for two and four-week sessions. Advanced riding lessons are two hours long, three times a week, and are reserved for four-week campers.

Trail rides are available for beginner through advanced riders. Campers do not need to be in lessons to sign up for trail rides. Camp Seafarer’s horse trails weave through and around our 350 acres. Each ride is guided by staff and can be done in a Western or English seat.

Campers registering for advanced riding lessons must have previous knowledge with walking, trotting and cantering.

Our horses are leased each summer from St. Andrews University’s Equestrian program in Laurinburg, NC. Campers must supply their own riding equipment, which includes an ASTM-SEI approved helmet, riding boots, and long pants.

Cancellations and Refunds:
In order to cancel a Horseback Riding program, Camp must receive a written cancellation before May 15. The $50 deposit is non-refundable.

In cases where Horseback Riding lessons are canceled due to inclement weather, we make every effort to make up the missing lesson if weather and program schedules permit. Canceled lessons due to inclement weather will not be refunded. Rates for our horseback riding offerings take into account the fact that most campers will miss at least one lesson for weather or a program conflict. Non-attendance for lessons does not result in a refund. When you enroll your child, you are reserving a space, time and staffing whether or not your child attends the lesson.

If you have specific questions about our Horseback Riding Program, please contact the Camp Office at (252) 249-1212.

Riding lesson registration opens March 5 for returning riders and March 19 for new riders. All registration is available in your online account and will end on May 1.
